Installing the FLOWREAD™
The FLOWREAD™ measures the accurate water flow through your recirculation system. Our meters are calibrated to the size of your piping, so if you have 1 ½-inch piping, you would want to purchase a 1 ½-inch flow meter, a two-inch flow meter for two-inch piping, and so on. The 1 ½-inch option will measure between 10–70 gallons per minute (GPM). Our guide will help show you how to install the FLOWREAD™ (in this case, the 1 ½-inch version), which often takes less than two minutes to complete.
STEP 1: CHECK YOUR PARTS
Like we discussed above, for a 1 ½-inch pipe, you will be installing the 1 ½-inch flowmeter (R-315). Note that the FLOWREAD™ mounts to horizontal pipes only. Your shipment will include two stainless steel clamps, a gasket, and two screws.
STEP 2: TURN OFF POWER TO THE PUMP
You will want to do this at your circuit breaker.
STEP 3: RELIEVE WATER PRESSURE
This will be at the relief valve on top of the filter.
STEP 4: CHOOSE AN INSTALLATION SITE
You will want to provide a MINIMUM of 8-inch clearance above the pipe to provide ample room for the flowmeter. Install the meter in a straight run of pipe as far as possible from any disturbances. The distance required for accuracy is 5 times the pipe diameter before the meter and 2 times the pipe diameter after the meter. In this example we will need 7.5 inches before the meter and 3 inches after. Be sure to install the FLOWREAD™ flowmeter after the filter, and avoid placing it right after a point where you inject chemicals such as chlorine or acid.
STEP 5: LOCATE THE CENTER OF THE HOLE FOR THE FLOWMETER.
The hole will be located at the top of the pipe at a point that provides 7.5 inches of pipe before the flowmeter from where the water is coming, as well as 3 inches of straight pipe after the flowmeter to where the water returns.
STEP 6: DRILL A PILOT HOLE
Be sure to drill this pilot hole with a 1/2" drill bit to center the larger drill.
STEP 7: DRILL A 5/8 INCH HOLE
The flowmeter MUST be installed straight up and down - within two degrees.
STEP 8: REMOVE ALL BURRS
Be sure to remove all burrs around the flowmeter hole with a round file.
STEP 9: INSERT THE PITOT INTO THE HOLE
Make sure that the gasket is in place and that the pitot tube opening faces into the direction of the flow.
STEP 10: PLACE THE CLAMPS
Put the clamps into place on either side of the flowmeter and tighten the clamps, alternating between sides, and a little at a time so as to ensure that the flowmeter is straight up and down.
STEP 11: ENSURE THAT THE FLOWMETER IS COMPLETELY VERTICAL
Do this by using a level and tightening the clamps (but don’t overtighten!).
STEP 12: TURN ON THE POWER TO THE PUMP
Again, this will be at the circuit breaker.
STEP 13: CLOSE OFF THE RELIEF VALVE AFTER WATER BEGINS SPRAYING OUT
That’s it! You have successfully installed your FLOWREAD™ Pool Efficiency Flowmeter and should now be able to read your flowmeter at the top of the float. Now you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your beautiful, clean pool!
